Boston City Closes Out Preseason With Loss At Merrimack College
Sat, Apr 22, 2017 6:51 pm

Boston City FC closed out the club’s 2017 preseason with a 2-1 loss away to Merrimack College, but again dominated during a first half that featured the majority of players who have started all three friendly matches.

In each of the club’s three preseason matches, the starting XI has dictated the pace of the first half, scoring a total of four goals, while conceding none.

Jhonata Batista continued his scoring streak, latching onto a through ball from captain Ronaldo Vieira after a quickly-taken free kick to score his third goal in as many matches after 30 minutes.

A host of changes early in the second half saw only one starter remain in the line-up and the long spells of possession that had underlined the Lions’ control on the match before the interval, lessened as Merrimack fought back.  Sebastian Toro beat keeper Estive Sosa from the spot after Jadson Leite had conceded a penalty after 59 minutes, then five minutes from time, Michael Dushman glanced home a header from a corner to seal the win.

Boston City might have been comfortably ahead long before Batiasta struck.  The opening quarter of an hour saw Michael Rincon’s shot saved, Gilly Desouza fire across the face of goal, Batista denied at point blank range, Homero Morais miss the target and Isaac Addai screw a finish wide.

Merrimack almost equalized on the stroke of halftime when Ryan Wine capitalized on a defensive slip to force Vitor Scariot to push the ball behind and then rattled the post with a header from the resulting corner.

After 86 minutes, Leite almost redeemed himself for his trip in the penalty area with a 20-yard drive that was held beneath the cross bar by the home keeper to preserve Merrimack’s lead.

Boston City opens the new National Premier Soccer League season next weekend at home to New York Cosmos B at Malden Catholic High School at 7pm on Saturday, April 29.
