Rafael kicked off the spring season as a member of Boston City’s Under 20s team in the Bay State Soccer League. The 20-year-old scored a hat-trick in his first match, and was promoted to the first team. He made his debut for the Lions coming off the bench in the first half of a narrow 1-0 loss away to New York Athletic Club.
He logged 280 minutes in five matches and his relentless running was rewarded with his first goal for the club in a 1-1 home draw with Seacoast United Mariners.
DeSouza, who is originally from Ipatinga, Brazil, scored 5 goals and had 2 assists last season as a sophomore with the UMass Beacons. He was an All-New England, All-State and Eastern Mass All-Star as a senior at Watertown High School and earned Middlesex League and Team MVP honors in 2015.
