Boston City FC will kick off the club’s National Premier Soccer League season a week earlier than originally planned when New York Cosmos B visit on Sunday, April 29, at 6pm.
The clash between the rivals, who have opened the past two NPSL campaigns in the opening kickoff match, will be played at the Lions’ Malden Catholic home venue. Tickets are available at https://tickets.completeticketsolutions.com/bfc/Online/
The move to Sunday, April 29, is to accommodate the Cosmos playing in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Play-In round the day following the originally scheduled NPSL date.
“The quest to advance in the U.S. Open Cup is important and while we are not involved in the competition this year, it makes sense for us to help an NPSL club represent the league with the best chance of success,” said Boston City FC Managing Director Craig Tornberg. “Our coach Palhinha and players are particularly excited about opening our season a week earlier as they have been looking forward to this match up.
The New York club, whose legendary former players include Pele, Franz Beckenbauer and Giorgio Chinaglia, bring the storied Cosmos brand to Boston boasting a strong squad of professional players with experience at the highest level. Captain Danny Szetela has represented the U.S. Men’s National team, Chris Wingert is a MLS veteran of more than 300 matches, and coach Carlos Mendes captained the Cosmos to three recent NASL championships.
“The scheduling conflict created by the Open Cup play-in round was a challenge for all involved,” said Erik Stover, New York Cosmos COO. “We want to thank Boston City and the NPSL for helping us resolve this situation.”
Boston City FC faces a busy weekend on April 28 and 29 with the club’s Under 20s team traveling to Providence City in the BSSL McKenzie Cup first round and the first team welcoming the Cosmos the following day.
