Boston City FC supporters’ group the Ironsides Crew have honored defender and midfielder Willian Bonora Santana with their fourth annual Player of the Year award.
Willian was one of the few highlights of a difficult 2019 National Premier Soccer League season, performing consistently at full back and in midfield. The 26-year-old established himself as a starter and missed only two matches, both through injuries which he battled during the season, totaling 886 minutes.
Willian was named to the Football Manager NPSL Team of the Week in the Lions’ penultimate match as he scored to establish a 2-0 lead having assisted on the first goal in a 4-2 win over Kingston Stockade on June 30, snapping their 11-match unbeaten streak.
The Brazilian emerged as one of the stars of the club’s Bay State Soccer League development team, Boston City FC II, graduating to earn a regular first team place.
In his native Brazil, he played for junior teams Parana Clube, Avai futebol Clube, Portuguesa de Desportos SP, Amparo SP and Ceramica RS, while in the U.S. he attended and played soccer at the Savannah College of Art & Design.
The Ironsides Crew’s award has been won in previous seasons by goalkeeper Vitor Scariot (2016), top-scorer Isaac Nana Addai (2017) and goalkeeper Jake Wagmeister (2018).
