The Boston City Under 20s team in the Bay State Soccer League (BSSL) has already served as a stage for unearthing talented players, with two young Lions joining the first team squad for this Sunday’s visit to New York Athletic Club, kickcoff 3pm.
Midfielder Santiago Cardona (pictured) and striker Rafael DeSouza will travel as part of the 18 players on duty in the third National Premier Soccer League match of the season.
As a sophomore at Dean College this past fall, Cardona won New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) first-team all-conference honors having played 20 matches, scoring 4 goals and providing 3 assists from midfield.
Cardona, who hails from Revere, scored the Cardinal and White’s first goal of the season, finding the back of the net just ten minutes in the season-opening win at Rhode Island College. Dean College (16-3-1) reached the USCAA National Semifinal before losing on penalties.
DeSouza, who is originally from Ipatinga, Brazil, scored 5 goals and had 2 assists last season as a sophomore with the UMass Beacons.
Raffi scored a hat-trick in the first-ever Boston City FC U20s match in a 3-1 win at home to Worcester Warriors.
He helped Watertown High School to the state championship game in 2012, was a named an All-New England, All-State and Eastern Mass All-Star as a senior and earned Middlesex League and Team MVP honors in 2015.
